Smoke Shop murder suspect avoided prison after near-miss with deputy

A local man who avoided jail after a violent 2020 car chase that nearly killed a Richmond County deputy is now facing charges in a deadly robbery at an Augusta smoke shop.

Terrance Remon Walker, 22, was arrested over the weekend in connection with the fatal shooting of 29-year-old Abdallah Abu Rubeha, an employee at the Smoke Shop on Lumpkin Road. The incident occurred Friday night, when deputies responded to reports of a gunshot victim. Rubeha, who had been shot in the head after refusing to hand over cash, later died at a local hospital early Saturday morning.

Walker’s criminal history dates back to 2020, when, at just 17 years old, he led law enforcement on a high-speed chase in a stolen car, nearly striking Deputy Anthony Martinez in the process. Walker faced seven charges, including aggravated assault on a peace officer, fleeing police, firearm possession, and auto theft – serious offenses that could have resulted in a lengthy prison sentence.

However, Walker was given reduced charges under District Attorney Jared Williams. Three were dropped, and the aggravated assault charge was reduced to felony obstruction. Senior Superior Court Judge Daniel J. Craig was not bound by any sentence and gave Walker 10 years of probation under the First Offender Act. Walker was also allowed to serve probation for the car theft, weapon possession, and fleeing police. He was represented by defense attorney Pete Theodocion.

Despite being given a second chance, Walker violated the terms of his probation more than once. Just days after his sentence, he failed a drug screen, testing positive for marijuana. Then, last summer, he was charged with domestic violence in Burke County. Although the charge was a misdemeanor, it wasn’t enough to revoke his probation, as his probation officer granted him a waiver.

Now, Walker is back in the news. Following the murder of Rubeha, authorities quickly traced the vehicle linked to the crime to Waynesboro, where Burke County deputies had been involved in a pursuit. Walker was apprehended, and investigators recovered a handgun believed to be used in the robbery, along with stolen items from the scene. He is now facing charges of felony aggravated assault, armed robbery, and weapon possession. Additional charges are expected, as the victim’s death has led to homicide charges.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are still searching for two other suspects believed to be involved in the crime.
