Man killed in downtown Augusta shooting, second homicide of 2025

A man was fatally shot in downtown Augusta on Wednesday afternoon outside Richmond Summit apartments, becoming the second confirmed homicide in Richmond County this year.

According to Sgt. Caleb Lee of the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the 700 block of Broad Street at 3:23 p.m. after reports of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers found a male victim with at least one gunshot wound to the chest.

The victim, identified as 41-year-old Quincy Clay Fields, was transported to the hospital but later died from his injuries, Coroner Mark Bowen said. The family has set up a GoFundMe page for help with viewing and burial expenses.

Victor Prince, suspect

Victor Prince, 62, has been charged with murder and weapon possession in the crime. There are reports that the suspect and victim were both residents of Richmond Summit and knew each other.

This marks the second homicide in Richmond County in 2025, following an earlier shooting incident this month.

The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.
