Grovetown woman not charged after shooting ex in home invasion attempt

A domestic dispute in Grovetown on Monday night ended with one man being shot after he allegedly attempted to break into a home.

The incident occurred around 9:27 p.m. Monday on the 7600 block of Main Street.

According to Grovetown Police Chief Jamey Kitchens, officers were dispatched to the scene in response to reports of a domestic disturbance and gunfire. A female resident told officers that she fired a single shot at Devaris Hampton, a 36-year-old man, after he allegedly broke a living room window in an attempt to enter the home.

The female, who was not identified, told police that Hampton is the father of her 2-year-old daughter and she is nine months pregnant with his child. She said that he had been upset after their recent breakup. While she was on the phone with a third party, she texted her family to call 911 as Hampton became increasingly aggressive.

“When he broke the window and tried to force his way inside, she fired one shot, striking him in the upper right arm,” Chief Kitchens said.

Hampton fled the scene and sought help at a nearby residence on Adams Lane, where he asked the homeowner to call 911. Officers quickly arrived and provided medical assistance to Hampton until fire department personnel and Gold Cross EMS took over. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment and later released.

Hampton was subsequently arrested and taken into custody at the Columbia County Detention Center on unrelated probation warrants. He also faces a charge of Criminal Trespass – Family Violence related to the incident.

No charges will be filed against the female, who was found to have acted in self-defense, Chief Kitchens said.

The investigation revealed that she was protecting herself, her unborn child, and two minor children who were present in the home at the time.

“Based on the facts and evidence, we believe the female acted in self-defense, and she will not face charges,” Chief Kitchens stated.

Hampton has previous convictions for domestic violence, drunk driving and interfering with a 911 call in Columbia County.
