A young Augusta mother who went to the sheriff’s office for an employment criminal history check can add a charge to her record after leaving her 1-year-old baby alone in the LEC parking lot on Thursday afternoon, authorities said. Latoya McNeil, 19, was arrested for deprivation of a minor in the incident. Sheriff’s Lt. Tony Walden spotted the 1-year-old girl strapped into a car seat of a Chevy Malibu that was illegally parked at 401 Walton Way. The child was screaming from inside the vehicle, but the windows were rolled up and the doors were locked. About 25 minutes later, McNeil came running out of the LEC and admitted leaving the girl unattended for over a half hour. “I was not thinking,” she said. McNeil was arrested and the child was turned over to to her father. DFACS was also called. County records show the mother has one previous conviction for shoplifting.
