An elderly Augusta man was one of three people connected to a bizarre copper theft in which three suspects allegedly stole metal from one recycler and tried to sell it to another. Johnny Heggs, 71, was charged today with felony theft by receiving stolen property in connection with the theft of about 200 pounds of copper from CMC Recyling on Old Savannah Road. Last Thursday, Heggs and two other men showed up with the stolen copper at Augusta Steel and Metal on Gordon Highway, where they tried to sell it. But an employee there noticed the copper had already been processed by a recycling center and called the CMC Recycling and confirmed the items were stolen from their warehouse. Also named as suspects: 46-year-old Floyd Tate of Augusta and 45-year-old Antonio Roberts of Hephzibah. Heggs remains in jail this afternoon with no bond.
