Carl Thurmond

It’s safe to say Carl Thurmond won’t be breaking into homes anytime soon.

The 43-year-old man fell on his head Saturday night while fleeing a Hephzibah home that he was burglarizing, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down, authorities say. The victims returned home on Daisy Lane and saw Thurmond, their yard man, inside.

The suspect ran out to the deck and jumped. “Apparently, he fell right on his head and he broke the fifth vertebra,” sheriff’s Lt. Calvin Chew said.

Thurmond couldn’t move, so the victims called 911, and the suspect was taken to MCG, where he remains today. Investigators reportedly found a remote in Thurmond’s pocket that matched the TV he was about to steal from his clients.

A warrant has been issued against Thurmond for burglary, but the sheriff’s office is not rushing to charge him, since they would then be responsible for his medical bills.

(Thurmond is shown here in a 2009 mugshot for obstruction of an officer and multiple traffic offenses.)
