Authorities have charged 14-year-old Aaron Schmidt with murder in Monday’s shooting death of his friend and neighbor, 14-year-old Alana Calahan, on Miles Road.
Without discussing specifics, sheriff’s Capt. Steve Morris said the girl got home from Harlem Middle School and was at her computer when she was shot in the neck. She was found several yards away from her home in a wooded area, and the gun was later found on the property in a wooded area.
Morris said the gun was property of the girl’s family. Schmidt is being charged as an adult but is being held in the Regional Youth Detention Center on charges of murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
